Apply for a Dutch identity card for an adult

Apply for a new identity card on time

The municipality is currently receiving a lot of applications for new passports and identity cards. Apply for your identity card on time. It can take more time than usual to get an appointment and collect your document.

How it works

  1. Read the conditions

    So that you know for sure whether you can apply for an identity card.

  2. Make an appointment

    You must visit the municipality in person to apply for an identity card.

  3. Make sure you have what you need

    You have to take this with you to the appointment.

  4. Go to the appointment

    Take everything which is required. The municipality will check your documents and will submit your identity card application.

  5. Pick up your identity card

    It will be ready after 6 working days. You do not need to make an appointment.

Conditions

  • You have Dutch citizenship (nationality)
  • You are registered in the Municipality of The Hague
  • You are 18 years or older.

Your current identity card and passport

Do you have additional identity documents? Take everything with you. Even if they are expired or from a foreign country.

The passport photo may not be more than 6 months old. Read all of the requirements on the Begin external link: website of the Government of the Netherlands(External link), end external link.. If the photo does not meet all the requirements, the municipality will not be able to submit your application. You will then have to make a new appointment.

A bank card

You will pay at the municipal counter when you apply. You can pay with your bank card. You can also pay in cash at City Hall Spui. You cannot pay with a credit card.

Tips for a smooth application process

– Make sure that your hands are clean. The municipality will take your fingerprints during the appointment.
– You do not speak Dutch well? And do you also have trouble speaking English? Take somebody with you to the appointment who can translate for you. This way the municipality can assist you well.

Make an appointment at the municipality to apply for an identity card.

Need an identity card quickly?

  • Indicate this during your appointment.
  • Are you applying before 14.00 hrs.? Then your identity card will be ready after 2 working days. For example: if you apply Monday before 14.00 hrs., you can collect it Wednesday.
  • You will pay an extra fee for this.

Your identity card will be ready after 6 working days at the city office where you applied for it.

You have 3 months to collect your identity card. After that the municipality will have to destroy it. You will then have to make a new appointment and pay again.

Tip:

Wednesday morning is usually a good time to pick up a passport.
Busy times are:
– between 12.00 and 13.00 hrs.
– Thursday evening in City Hall Spui
–Friday afternoon in City Hall Spui and the Leyweg City Office

An identity card is valid for 10 years if you are 18 years or older when you apply. You are allowed to renew your identity card at any time. You do not have to wait until it has expired.

You can use your identity card to travel to the EU countries, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. A list of all countries can be found on the Begin external link: website of the Government of the Netherlands.(External link), end external link.

Are you married or do you have a civil partnership? You can have the surname of your partner placed on your identity card. This can be written in 4 ways:

  • e/v: husband or wife of
  • p/v: partner of
  • g/v: divorced from
  • w/v: widow or widower of

The name of your partner will be printed after the abbreviation.

You are never allowed to throw away or destroy your identity card. You must turn in an expired identity card. The identity card remains the property of the state. The municipality can also invalidate it at your request, so that you can keep the old document.

Has somebody close to you died? Then you have to turn the identity card in at the municipality. You can do this at the reception desk in City Hall Spui or the Leyweg City Office.

Yes, you can. Make an appointment and indicate under the number (‘aantal’) how many identity cards (ID-kaarten) you need. For example, 4 identity cards for 4 family members. Extra time will then be reserved for you.
