Renew your Dutch passport on time
The municipality needs to replace a greater number of travel documents this year. This will take longer than normal. Avoid stress and check on time whether your Dutch passport or identity card is still valid. If it has expired, make an appointment as quickly as possible for a new travel document.
Ten years ago the validity of Dutch passports changed from 5 to 10 years. This means that the municipality has to replace an extra large number of travel documents this year. In July about 11,000 travel documents (passports and identity cards) for residents of The Hague will expire. It will be extra busy at the municipal counters in City Hall and the Leyweg City Office.
Because many people are applying, it can take longer for you to get an appointment. This is why the municipality is asking residents to check whether their travel document is still valid.
Extra counters open
In order to help residents as quickly as possible, there are more municipal employees available. And extra counters are open. Residents of The Hague will also get a letter earlier to remind them to renew their Dutch passport and/or identity card. Nonetheless it can still be busy.
Replacing passport or identity card
Do you have to replace your Dutch passport or identity card? Make an appointment as quickly as possible for a new travel document. Take the following with you to the appointment:
- a passport photo which is less than 6 months old and which meets the Begin external link: requirements for a passport photo(External link), end external link..
- your old Dutch passport or identity card (the travel document you want to replace).
You will be able to pick up the new travel document after a week. You do not need to make an appointment to collect the document.
Are you in a hurry?
During your appointment at the municipal counter, you can request an expedited procedure for a passport and/or identity card. If you apply before 14.00 hrs., the document will be ready after 2 working days. You will pay an extra fee for this.
