Smart mobility

The municipality wants to keep The Hague accessible, attractive and liveable. Now and in the future. Smart mobility contributes towards this goal. It involves clean, safe transportation solutions which make better use of the space in the city.

The municipality is working on a Begin link: mobility transition, end link. . This means that the municipality is encouraging means of transportation which use space efficiently and are good for the city and its inhabitants. For example, walking, cycling and public transport.

What the municipality is already doing with smart mobility

  • Sharing know-how and working together with other municipalities within the G5 frontrunner group (the 5 largest municipalities in the Netherlands).
  • Shared mobility: there are different providers of (electric) Begin link: shared bicycles, end link. , shared e-mopeds and Begin link: shared cars, end link. active in The Hague. And since the autumn of 2019 you can also use the Begin external link: shared e-cargo bike(External link), end external link. in the city. The municipality is testing whether shared mobility meets the needs of residents and visitors. If they are successful, these mobility solutions will soon be available at more and more locations in the city.
  • The municipality is experimenting with mobility hubs, for example in the Binckhorst. These are central spots in the city where people can park their car and continue their journey using (electric) shared bicycles and shared cars.
  • Pilot with Begin external link: Parking Heroes(External link), end external link. app. This app is linked to 350 parking sensors. Residents can use the app to see which (disabled) parking spaces are available in shopping streets in the city centre. The aim is to cut down on traffic searching for parking and to better serve residents and visitors.
  • The municipality is experimenting with Begin link: bicycle platforms, end link. . These are boards with 4 U-shaped bicycle stands with room for 8 bicycles. The platform is as large as a parking space for cars. Residents living in streets with little or no space for bicycle parking can request the bicycle platforms for their street. A temporary platform will first be placed. If people are happy with it, it will become a permanent bicycle parking space.
  • The municipality is supporting the principle of the Vrijstraat. Together with a residents’ cooperative the municipality is investigating whether a parking space can be used for another purpose. For example, for bicycle parking, for greenery or as a play area. In this way, the municipality is stimulating Begin link: car sharing, end link. and space is freed up to improve the liveability of streets.
  • The municipality has contributed to the Moves app. This app has been available for travellers around Rotterdam and The Hague since the summer of 2021. Moves gives you door-to-door travel advice. You can use the app to plan, book and pay for all modes of transportation in the region. You can download the app in the app store. More information can be found on the Begin external link: website of Moves(External link), end external link..
