Separating waste: plastic packaging, metal packaging and drink cartons
New products can be made from plastic packaging, metal packaging and drink cartons (PMD). Such as crates, drink cans, other packaging and toilet paper. Read below how you can dispose of your PMD.
PMD no longer separate
As of September 2023 the municipality will pick up (collect) PMD in a different way. In most neighbourhoods you will no longer have to dispose of PMD separately. You will then be allowed to put plastic packaging, metal packaging and drink cartons in the garbage bag together with your regular household waste. The waste management company will separate the PMD from the household waste at a later moment.
Nothing will change for neighbourhoods where PMD is collected door to door.
Changes step by step
The changes to the system will be made in stages. The changes were already finalised in the city districts of Centrum, Segbroek, Scheveningen and Loosduinen in September 2023.
Leidschenveen-Ypenburg, Haagse Hout, Escamp and Laak next
As of mid-June 2024 the municipality will start removing or replacing the PMD containers step by step in the city districts of Leidschenveen-Ypenburg, Haagse Hout, Escamp and Laak.
The municipality had postponed this process. This was due to a major fire at AVR in Rotterdam. AVR is the company which processes household waste from The Hague. The fire brought domestic waste incineration at the plant to a standstill. Now AVR can resume operations and it can remove the PMD from the waste again.
What will change?
Neighbourhoods where PMD is not collected door to door
If there are still PMD containers in your neighbourhood, you can use them for your PMD. There are still PMD containers in the city districts of Haagse Hout, Escamp, Laak and Leidschenveen-Ypenburg. You can continue to use them as usual.
Neighbourhoods where PMD is collected separately
Do you live in a neighbourhood where PMD is collected door to door? Then nothing will change. You then have a PMD container (wheelie bin) at home which you put by the street on collection day. See the waste collection days for your street in the Begin link: household waste calendar, end link. .
