About the NATO Summit
The NATO Summit will be held in The Hague in 2025. The Hague is the international city of peace and justice. This is why it is fitting that the NATO Summit will be held here. The summit will take place at the World Forum on 24 and 25 June 2025. What is NATO? And what is the NATO Summit?
The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) is a political and military union of 32 countries in Europe and North America. NATO was founded in 1949 to safeguard peace and security in these countries. All NATO countries work together and protect each other. Its headquarters is in Brussels.
The Netherlands has been a member of NATO since it was established in 1949. The most important agreement among NATO countries is that an attack on 1 member is an attack on all members. This is also stated in the agreements of the NATO Treaty. If 1 of the countries is attacked, all of the NATO countries help each other.

A NATO Summit is a meeting of the heads of state, government leaders and ministers of foreign affairs and defence from NATO countries. They discuss important security issues during the NATO Summit. And they decide what NATO will do and how.
The NATO countries have agreed to hold the NATO Summit in a different NATO country each time. NATO organises a summit if there is reason to do so. Such as when Russia invaded Ukraine, because this changed the security situation. A NATO Summit is thus not held every year. The last NATO Summit was held in Washington, D.C. from 9 to 11 July 2024.
Other countries and organisations usually are also invited to NATO Summits for particular subjects. For example the European Union or partners from Asia.
All kinds of measures are required to ensure that the NATO Summit in The Hague goes smoothly. These measures will affect residents, businesses and other people in the city.
Visitors
About 8,500 visitors will come to the NATO Summit. They will attend 3 types of meetings:
- Meetings for heads of state, ministers of defence and ministers of foreign affairs (delegations)
- A public event (Public Forum) for invited guests
- A large international media centre for approximately 2,000 journalists
1. Delegations
The NATO Summit is not open to just anyone. The summit is only for invited guests. They are expected to include the heads of states, government leaders, ministers of foreign affairs and ministers of defence of 45 countries. In total, these so-called delegations will be made up of about 6,000 people.
2. Public Forum event
The NATO Public Forum will take place during the NATO Summit. This is a meeting for stakeholders such as young people, opinion formers, politicians, academics and international security experts. At the Public Forum heads of state and government leaders will hold a dialogue with these stakeholders on various topics related to the security of the alliance and its members. Some 500 people are expected to attend. This meeting is also only for invited guests.
3. International media centre
About 2,000 to 3,000 journalists from around the world will report on the NATO Summit from the media centre.
Location
The 2025 NATO Summit will be held in the World Forum in The Hague’s International Zone. Given the size of the summit, temporary buildings will be placed next to the World Forum. This will affect the accessibility of the area.
After an extensive selection procedure, the choice fell on The Hague and the World Forum. This location meets all the requirements for organising a summit of this scale. The location must:
- have enough space
- ensure a high level of security
- be easily accessible
- have enough hotel rooms in the area.
