Request marriage certificate or certificate of civil partnership

Did you get married in The Hague? Or did you enter into a civil partnership in The Hague? You can request written proof of this. You will then get a copy or extract of the certificate.

An authority asks you for a marriage certificate or certificate of civil partnership. You request this in the municipality where you were married or entered into a civil partnership.

You will get a copy or a multiple-language (international) extract of the certificate. The original certificate remains the property of the municipality.

Which document do I need?

Usually the authority requesting the certificate will tell you which document you need. It will also indicate how old the document may be. The difference between the copy and the extract:

  • A copy contains exactly the same information as the certificate itself. It is also called a certified, official or authenticated copy. The copy is only available in Dutch.
  • A multiple-language (international) extract contains a summary of the certificate. The extract has an explanation in 10 languages: Dutch, English, French, German, Spanish, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Turkish and Serbo-Croatian.

When you apply for the certificate you can indicate which document you would like to have.

You will then get a copy of the certificate. This also called a certified, official or authenticated copy. The original certificate remains the property of the municipality.

Copy in another language

The copy is only available in Dutch. Do you need a copy of the certificate in another language? Then you need to arrange for this copy to be translated by a sworn translator.

€ 16.60 (in 2024) or € 17.10 (in 2025) excluding postage costs. After you apply you will receive an invoice by email.

The municipality will send you the copy or extract within 3 weeks.

Would you like to request the certificate using your DigiD? You can only do this if you are registered in the Personal Records Database (BRP). Read more about the BRP on the Begin external link: website of the Government of the Netherlands(External link), end external link..
