Change your registered gender
Would you like to change the gender listed on your birth certificate? From a ‘female’ to a ‘male’ or from a ‘male’ to a ‘female’ or to ‘X’? Request a change here. The municipality can then change the gender on your birth certificate. You can also change your given names, if you wish.

Conditions

You are 16 years or older.

You can have your gender changed in The Hague only if you were born in The Hague.

Were you born in The Hague but you are not a Dutch citizen? Then you can only change your gender and given names if you have lived in the Netherlands at least 1 year. You must also have a valid residence permit.

You have made a declaration to an expert: this statement affirms that you are certain that you belong to another gender than stated on your birth certificate. And that you understand the consequences of your decision to change your gender.
- A statement by an expert. This may not be older than 6 months than the date on your application. You can get this statement from:
- the doctors and psychologists at the Kennis- en Zorgcentrum voor Genderdysforie at the Amsterdam UMC
- Center of Expertise for Sex & Gender at the Radboud UMC in Nijmegen
- the gender teams at the UMCG in Groningen and LUMC Curium in Leiden
- experts who are designated at the request of the Central Information Point for Healthcare Professions (CIBG).
- If you have Dutch citizenship (nationality): a copy of your:
- Dutch passport
- Dutch identity card
- Dutch nationality certificate
- If you have a different citizenship (nationality): a copy of:
- your passport
- the front and back of a valid residence permit

There is no charge for changing your gender registration on your birth certificate. However, the municipality will charge you to send your any original documents by registered mail.
It will take approximately 1 month to change your information on your birth certificate. You will get a confirmation once your information has been updated.
Important after the change
- The municipality where you live will make the changes in the Personal Records Database (BRP).
- All government agencies which have access to the BRP will automatically receive notification of any changes.
- It is up to you to inform other organisations that your gender and your given names were changed.
Given names do not change automatically
You can only change your given names if this is legally permitted in the country of citizenship.
Old documents no longer valid
After the change your old Dutch passport, identity card, residence permit and driving licence are no longer valid. You have to apply for new identity documents at your own expense.
Make a secure copy of your ID

Compensation for costs
Are you a resident of The Hague? Then you could get reimbursed for previously incurred costs. For example:
- the costs of the assessment by an expert
- the expert statement
- part of the costs for legal assistance
- the costs for the application for a passport, identity card or driving licence.
You can only apply 1 time for compensation.
