Was your child born in The Hague? Then you must report the birth to the municipality within 3 working days. The day of the birth does not count.

The birth is allowed to be reported by the mother, father or co-mother.
Other situation?
Is the mother, father or co-mother not able to report the birth? The following people are also allowed to report the birth:
- somebody who was present at the birth
- somebody living in the home where the baby was born
- a staff member of the hospital or clinic where the baby was born
Was your baby born in a different municipality, but you live in The Hague?
- Report the birth in the municipality where your child was born.
- That municipality will inform the Municipality of The Hague about the birth.
- The Municipality of The Hague will register your child. Your child will then be registered in the Personal Records Database (BRP).
- The municipality will send you the citizen service number (BSN) for your child by post.
A valid form of identification for the person reporting the birth and the mother
The proof of identity may be a passport, driving licence or residence permit. You are allowed to identify yourself using a driving licence only if you are registered in the Netherlands. The mother’s proof of identity is allowed to be a copy.
Information about the birth
The given names, date of birth and time of birth for your baby. The statement of birth from the hospital or the midwife also contains this information.
The acknowledgement of child certificate and the certificate of surname choice
If you have this. The acknowledgement of child certificate is needed only if your child was acknowledged Begin link: before the birth, end link. . A child can also be acknowledged Begin link: after the birth, end link. and during the appointment. And did you already choose a Begin link: surname, end link. before the birth? Then take this certificate of surname choice with you to the appointment.
Your marriage or partnership booklet
If you have one. The municipality can then add your child to the booklet. This is not mandatory.

Was your baby born in The Hague, but you live in a different municipality? Then you report the birth in The Hague. The Municipality of The Hague will inform your municipality about the birth of your child. You will receive a citizen service number (BSN) for your child from the municipality where you live.
You report the birth in the municipality where your child was born.

The municipality will draw up the birth certificate when you report the birth. This is proof that a child was born. You can request a Begin link: copy of the birth certificate, end link. . You must pay a fee for this.
- The municipality where you reported the birth will inform the Municipality of The Hague about the birth of your child.
- The Municipality of The Hague will register your child. Your child will then be registered in the Personal Records Database (BRP).
- The municipality will send you the citizen service number (BSN) for your child by post.
